{:pt}Como qualquer logotipo o nosso pretende identificar a companhia que o detém.

O nosso é composto por 2 partes:

1 –  as iniciais do nome da firma – H e M

2 – os símbolos das duas actvidades – bastão de Esculápio (Asklépios em grego) e caduceu de Mercúrio (Hermés para os gregos)

O bastão de Esculápio (Deus da Medicina), símbolo da Medicina, está incrustado no primeiro ramo do H – é a primeira inicial e é a primeira actividade da firma.

O caduceu de Mercúrio, (Deus do Comércio), símbolo do Comércio, está incrustado no 2º ramo do M – é a 2ª inicial e a segunda actividade da firma.

Não, o caduceu de Mercúrio / Hermés não é o símbolo da Medicina é o símbolo do Comércio. É o Caduceu ou a “varinha mágica” do Deus romano Mercúrio (Hermes para os gregos) que era o mensageiro dos deuses, inventor dos encantamentos, condutor dos mortos e protetor dos mercadores e ladrões, etc.etc.

Como aparece então tantas vezes ligado a actividades que por sua vez estão ligadas à Medicina?

Esculápio/Asklepius era o Deus da Medicina e assim, o seu bastão com a cobra enrolada passou a ser o símbolo da Medicina, da arte de curar. Quer a World Medical Assotiation (WMA), quer a American Medical Assotiation (AMA) o adoptaram. Estilizado, mas lá está o bastão com a sua cobra como símbolo da Medicina anexo Às iniciais destas duas entidades.

Mercúrio para os romanos, Hermés para os gregos, era o Deus do Comercio. O seu Caduceu era a sua “varinha mágica” dele que era o mensageiro dos deuses, inventor dos encantamentos, condutor dos mortos e protetor dos mercadores e ladrões, etc.etc.

De onde vem então esta confusão entre o bastão de Esculápio e o caduceu de Mercúrio?

Apolo, ofereceu a Mercúrio o seu caduceu, ou seja, a sua “varinha mágica” de ouro juntamente com algumas capacidades de adivinhação em troca da lira e da flauta que Mercúrio tinha inventado. Era apenas uma varinha com poderes mágicos que foi ganhando peças simbólicas torando-se no “Caduceu de Mercúrio”.

Como assim?

– Mercúrio era o mensageiro dos Deuses e o principal intérprete da vontade divina. Aliás o seu nome em grego significa intérprete ou mensageiro. Para ser mensageiro tinha de ser veloz e ágil. Estas capacidades estão simbolizadas pelas duas asas presentes no seu caduceu e que não existiam nele quando Apolo lho ofereceu.

– Mercúrio lançou um dia o seu Caduceu entre duas serpentes que lutavam e estas entrelaçaram-se na haste numa atitude amistosa. Daí o aspecto conhecido do Caduceu com as duas serpentes entrelaçadas e a simbologia da negociação fonte de todo o Comercio. Mercúrio era Deus do Comércio e protector dos negociantes e o caduceu tornou-se assim o símbolo do Comércio.

– Assim a serpente é a primeira causa da confusão pois que desde o tempo dos babilónios que esteve relacionada com a cura e, portanto, com a atividade médica. A serpente tornou-se o símbolo de vários deuses da cura nas culturas antigas.

Mas é 1 serpente, a que está representada no bastão de Esculápio; as 2 serpentes entrelaçada, representadas no caduceu de Mercúrio simbolizam negociação.

– Para poder levar a cabo as suas missões de mensageiro de confiança dos Deuses e lhes poder dar as informações requeridas Mercúrio necessitava de ser invisível para além de veloz e ágil e assim cobria-se com o capacete de Hades que o tornava invisível.  E o seu caduceu ganhou um capacete entre as 2 asas – este Caduceu com capacte entre as asas é usado como símbolo da contabilidade sendo o símbolo dos contabilistas. Convém não esquecer que a contabilidade comercial é a parte mais importante da contabilidade continuando, pois, o caduceu a estar ligado ao comércio.

– Júpiter colocou-o ao serviço de Plutão. Uma das tarefas de Mercúrio era conduzir os mortos ao reino de Plutão que era o Deus das profundezas subterrâneas, onde reinava sobre os mortos.  Esta é a origem de, na antiguidade, ser costume os homens que procuravam os feridos e os mortos nos campos de batalha levarem o caduceu. Nos conflitos mais recentes o caduceu foi substituído pela bandeira branca ou pela bandeira da cruz vermelha. E assim chegamos ao facto de o caduceu de Mercúrio ser o símbolo de serviços de saúde de algumas forças armadas, inclusive a dos Estados Unidos.

E aqui está a origem de uma outra causa de confusão – a utilização do caduceu pelos serviços de sáude, pelos serviços ligados ao transporte dos feridos e dos mortos. Mas o símbolo dos médicos que tratavam desses feridos era e é o bastão de Esculápio.

Mas há ainda outras 3 razões:

– Uma é o facto de na Idade Média o Caduceu ser ligado à Alquimia logo à produção de medicamentos – daí à Medicina é um passo. Mas uma coisa é a produção de Medicamentos outra é a sua aplicação e a cura de doentes

– Outra mais recente e talvez a mais importante foi a publicação das obras de Hipócrates em grego pelo tipógrafo suíço Johannes Froben em 1538. O caduceu era o símbolo da sua tipografia e como tal, foi estampado na página frontal do livro

– Por fim as mudanças que a realidade económica tem imposto à atividade médica com a comercialização exagerada da profissão com planos de saúde impondo normas à actividade médica e, se muitos desses planos usam corretamente o caduceu do comércio, como símbolo, outros utilizam-no fazendo com que este seja confundido com o símbolo da medicina, o bastão de Esculápio.

Baseando-nos no Professor Joffre Marcondes de Rezende diremos:

– Com a intermediação dos serviços médicos por empresas de fins lucrativos, a medicina tornou-se objeto de comércio por parte de terceiros. O médico passou a ser apenas um prestador de serviços e o paciente um consumidor, ambos sujeitos a normas contratuais previamente estabelecidas. Neste sentido, estaria justificado o uso por essas empresas do Caduceu de Mercúrio/Hermes, símbolo do comércio, tanto mais que, para elas, todos os actos médicos são contabilizados como vendas. Isto não tem nada a ver com a Medicina em si, actividade que surgiu com o Homem, com o primeiro sinal de sofrimento e com o primeiro desejo de aliviá-lo e outro não deve ser seu objetivo primordial. É esta actividade, que é e deve continuar a ser representado pelo bastão de Esculápio e o que ele significa^:

– Cremos ser necessária uma campanha de esclarecimento, sobretudo nas faculdades de medicina, no sentido de alertar os estudantes sobre o único e verdadeiro símbolo da medicina: o bastão de Asclépio com uma só serpente. O caduceu de Hermes, símbolo do comércio, deve ser visto como um símbolo impróprio aos nobres ideais da Medicina.

Ours consits of 2 parts:

1-the initials of the company name of the firm-H and M

2-the symbols of the two actvidades-the Staff of Aesculapius (Asklepios in Greek) and the Caduceus of Mercury (Hermes to the Greeks)

The Staff of Aesculapius (God of Medicine), symbol of Medicine, is embedded in the first branch of the H – the 1st initial and the 1st activity of the firm.

Mercury’s Caduceus, (God of Trade), Trade symbol, is embeded in the second branch of the M – is the 2nd initial and the 2nd activity of the company.

No, the Caduceus of Mercury / Hermes is not the symbol of Medicine; it is the symbol of Commerce. It is the Caduceus or the “magic wand” of the Roman God Mercury (Hermes to the Greeks) who was the messenger of the Gods, inventor of incantations, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves, etc.etc.

How then does it appear so often linked to activities which in turn are linked to medicine?

Aesculapius / Asklepius was the God of medicine and thus his staff with the coiled snake became the symbol of Medicine, the art of healing. Both the World Medical Assotiation (WMA) or the American Medical Assotiation (AMA) adopted it. Stylized, but as you can see, it is the stick with its twisted snake as a symbol of Medicine attached to these two entities initials.

Mercury to the Romans, Hermes to the Greeks, was the God of Commerce. His Caduceus was his “magic wand” him who was the messenger of the Gods, inventor of incantations, conductor of the dead and protector of merchants and thieves, etc.etc.

Whence then comes this confusion between the staff of Aesculapius and the Caduceus of Mercury?

Apollo offered Mercury his Caduceus, ie, his gold “magic wand” along with some guessing capabilities in exchange for the lyre and the flute that Mercury had invented. . It was just a wand with magical powers that will gain symbolic pieces becoming the “Caduceus of Mercury.”

How then did they become attached to the wand?

-Mercury was the messenger of the Gods and the main interpreter of the divine will. Hermés, his name in Greek, means messenger or interpreter. To be a messenger he had to be fast and agile. These capacities are symbolized by the two wings present in his Caduceus and that did not exist when he got it from Apollo.

– One day Mercury threw his Caduceus between two fighting snakes and these entwined in a friendly attitude along the stick. Hence the very well known Caduceus look with both interlaced snakes, the symbol of trading and source of Commerce as a whole. Mercury was the God of Trade and protector of dealers and his Cadudeu thus became the symbol of Commerce.

– So, the snake is the first cause of confusion since from the time of the Babylonians that it was related to healing and therefore, with medical ac-tivity. The snake was the symbol of multiple healing Gods in ancient cultures.

But it’s one snake, that one that is represented in the Asclepius rod; the two serpents intertwined, represented in the Mercury caduceus symbolize negotiation.

To carry out the missions that the Gods trusted him as their messenger and can give the information required by them Mercury needed to be invisible as well as fast and agile and thus he covered up himself with Hades helmet which got him invisible. And then his Caduceus won a helmet between the two wings – this Caduceus with helmet between the wings is used too as a symbol of accounting being the symbol of the accountants. We should not forget that trade accounting is the most important part of accounting and therefore, the caduceus continues to be linked to trade.

Jupiter set him to Pluto service. One of the Mercury’s task was to lead the dead to the kingdom of Pluto whom was the God of the deep underground, where he reigned over the dead. This is why in antiquity men seeking the wounded and the dead on the battlefield take the Caduceus. In recent conflicts the Caduceus was replaced by the white flag or by the Red Cross flag. And so we come to the fact that the Mercury Caduceus be the health care symbol of some armed forces, including the US.

And here is the source of another cause of confusion – the use of the caduceus by health services, the transportation services related to the wounded and the dead. But the symbol of the doctors who healed those injured men was and will always be the rod of Asclepius.

But there are other 3 reasons still:

– One is the fact that in the Middle Ages the Caduceus is connected to Alchemy and that way to the production of drugs – drugs production and medicine are separated by a short step. But one thing is the production of drugs and other is their application and healing of patients – Another more recent and perhaps the most important fact was the pub-lication in 1538 of the works of Hippocrates in Greek by the Swiss typographer Johannes Froben The Caduceus was the logo of his typography and as such, was stamped on the book’s front page

-Finally the changes that the economic reality has imposed on the medical activity with exaggerated marketing profession with health plans requiring medical activity standards and if many of these plans use correctly use as a symbol the Caduceus of trade, others erroneously use the Staff of Aesculapius as its symbol.

Based on the words of the Teacher Joffre Marcondes de Rezende we will say:

– With the intermediation of medical services by profit companies, medi-cine has become object of trade by third parties. The doctor just hap-pened to be a service provider and the patient a consumer, both subject to previously established contractual rules. In this sense, it would be justi-fied the use by those companies of the Caduceus of Mercury / Hermes, the trade symbol. For them, all medical procedures are recorded as sales. This has nothing to do with medicine itself, an activity that came up with the man, with the first distress signal and the first desire to alleviate it and the other should not be your primary objective. It is this activity which is and should continue to be represented by Aesculapius bat and what it means.^:

We believe an awareness campaign is necessary, overall in medical schools, to alert the students about the only true symbol of medicine: the staff of Aesculapius with a single serpent. The Caduceus of Hermes, the commerce symbol, should be seen as an inappropriate symbol to the no-ble ideals of medicine.
